(Avon paperback, 2010, page 11):
“The wind rose, playing an ominous whistle through the rigging, as if a great, ravenous bird perched there waiting to pick our bones. As I sat helpless, trembling, the noise increased to a howl, then an unholy shriek.”
Of all Shakespeare’s plays that I have seen and/or read, the Tempest is the one for which I never could muster up any enthusiasm. My overriding feeling has always been utter revulsion for Caliban. Will The Gentleman Poet, Kathryn Johnson’s fictional account of the inspiration behind The Tempest, allow me to consider the play in a new light?
The subtitle reads, A Novel Of Love, Danger, And Shakespeare's The Tempest. In the book, an adventurous Shakespeare appears as a passenger travelling incognito aboard a ship that is wrecked off the coast of Bermuda. He proceeds to take an interest in the love story of two young survivors amid the tension-filled struggles of a new colony.
Historical fiction that promises suspense, mystery, and a dash of Shakespeare – how could I resist? Also, Johnson’s writing style is fresh and immediate: I smell the salty sea air and hear the creaking of the rigging.
