My teaser
(Translated by Terry Gallagher from the 2003 Japanese original Ima Ainiyukimasu; published in the USA by Viz Media, 2008. From page 27):
“She said something like this: ‘Soon I won’t be with you any longer, but when the rainy season returns, I will come back to see how the two of you are getting along.’
A cold rain was falling on that June day.”
Although ghost stories and paranormal romance are generally not my cup of tea – Nancy Atherton’s Aunt Dimity cosy mystery series being the exception – the sensational success of Be With You in Japan, where its popularity “inspired a blockbuster movie, a top-rated TV series and a best-selling manga” (back cover blurb), piqued my curiosity.
Since I have only reached chapter two I can say little about the story, in which a rainy day brings a widowed man and his young son a surprise that seems to defy the laws of nature, but perhaps not the laws of love. But the prose style reminds me of a plein air watercolour: its impressionistic quality captures the essence of a moment with lightness and subtlety.
